The inaugural pop-up The Rocks Push – The Poet & Pugilist Passion is a cross-cultural project that connects the rich, gritty history of the Rocks and art. It's a community-inclusive space hosting workshops and paintings by internationally acclaimed artist Miriam Cabello.
Visitors will discover that the Rocks was a place of bare-knuckle boxing matches that captivated the imaginations of famous Australian authors Henry Lawson and Banjo Paterson.
The Rocks Push became famous or infamous as young street gangs produced boxing legends in a fight for survival on Sydney's streets. From 1890's featherweight champion "Young Griffo" to 'Father of Australian Boxing' and captain of the Green Push, Larry Foley. These tales of the Rocks' history will inspire and play muse to daily workshops and new paintings.
Over four weeks the pop-up's street-front window will play host to Miriam as she creates a new painting. Day by day the public will be able to peer into the creative process and see each stroke as she brings her artwork to life. Sydneysiders and tourists are also invited to view demonstrations and participate in short, creative painting workshops.
